History:
Although consumption of a sprouting broccoli type vegetable was documented by Pliny the Elder in the 1st century AD, it wasn't until 1724 that evidence of broccoli first appeared in the UK in Phillip Miller's "Gardeners Dictionary", where it was referred to as "Italian Asparagus". The popularity of Broccoli has increased markedly over the last 30 years and it is now the biggest selling brassica vegetable in the UK. Broccoli is also referred to as calabrese (from Calabria region Italy).
