With developing concerns over the sustainability of food production Marshalls are proactive in their approach to environmental management. We are fully focussed on the environmental impact of our operations from field to shelf and make every effort to enhance sustainable development.
Marshalls currently farm 2,400 Ha of conventional vegetable crops both on their own managed operations and with selected commission growers. In addition to this 70 Ha of organic crops are grown locally. Much of this local production sits on the deep alluvial loam soils around the Boston area.
Increasing farmland biodiversity is a major focus for our farming operations spearheaded by the extensive replanting of hedgerows and introduction of field margins which has both facilitated wildlife corridors and enhanced native species. Buffer zones are now well established in line with the Local Biodiversity Action Plan.
Marshalls work closely with non governmental organisations such as LEAF (Linking Environment and Farming) and FWAG (Farming Wildlife Advisory Group) to develop our Integrated Crop Management approach carefully balancing environmental concerns with the economic production of high quality vegetable crops.
Assured Produce, LEAF marque and Soil Association audits are conducted annually to ensure our commitment and compliance to sustainable production.
A Waste Management System is currently been established to retract away from disposal to landfill and towards recycling and composting. Marshalls are working with their customers on reducing packaging without compromising the product quality or shortening shelf life.
Calculating our carbon footprint is also a project being undertaken by our Sustainable Development Coordinator and will be used to set a benchmark for the future reduction in carbon emissions throughout the Marshall's operations.
