Suggested Health Benefits

People believe onions have specific health benefits. It is often suggested the stronger the onion flavour, the more healthy the onion. Some highlights are:-

  • Onions are very low in fat and calories, 100g of onion, only contains 60cal, and trace of fat.
  • Some homeopathic treatments for hay fever contain onion, so it's suggested eating more onions could reduce hay fever symptoms.
  • Onion, garlic and leek could be used in savoury dishes in place of salt; a healthier flavour alternative.
  • For some people, eating onions may assist with lowering cholesterol in the blood.
  • Onions are high in vitamin C.

At the Food and Drink iNet Innovation Awards 2009, held in Leicester on Tuesday 17th November, the Food Processing Faraday Award for Most Innovative Large Food and Drink Manufacturer went to Marshalls (part of the Produce World Group), Butterwick, Boston, for the development of bellaverdeŽ sweet stem broccoli, that was launched in July 2009, and created in conjunction with Seminis.
