Valuable Tips
  • When preparing an onion, rinse gently under water as this will lessen the tear factor.
  • Add an onion studded with cloves to add flavour to a white sauce base.
  • Plant garlic cloves and use the leaves in salads or for garnishes.
  • Unblock a stuffed nose by sniffing an onion.
  • Place sliced onion on to an insect bite, it can reduce swelling and the itchiness.
  • Add quartered onions to the cavity of a chicken, it will remain moist and adds flavour.

Use an outer leaf of a leek to make a Bouquet Garni.  Take the leaf; add a bay leaf, a sprig of thyme, a small piece of celery, a few parsley stalks and a few crushed black pepper corns. Fold in to a small parcel, and tie with string (suitable for cooking) and add to stocks, soups and stews.
